2013 Hwy 71 Classic (Dirty Version)

11 Mar

The Hwy 71 Classic for 2013 has come and gone. This is the report from the Gravel Grinder option.

The idea for the gravel grinder started two years ago and has taken this long to come to fruition. For more on the history and the rides that inspired the Gravel Grinder option check out these two previos posts. Well Sort Of and Dirty Version One

The 71 Classic is always the unofficial start of the racing season. Local teams toe up to see who has been training and who hasn’t. It is also the first major organized ride of the year and tends to draw riders of all levels. This year’s event was a sanctioned USAC event and the set up at the start was very well done. Volunteers helped make this a very smooth running registration.

As usual, I showed up to the start of the Hwy 71 classic early enough to peruse the bikes and people. The event is a great place to see and catch up with lots of people that you dont normally see or haven’t seen since last riding season. The parking lot was overflowing with cars and bicycles. I walked around a bit chatting with riders and admiring their bikes. I normally have a few pics of bikes that I like but this year I guess nothing really struck my fancy to take photos of.

I did really like Jason BB’s Sworks though. With fresh Zipp 404 Firecrest Clinchers With fresh Zipp 404 Firecrest Clinchers

The Dirty Version riders convened at Brentwood in time to see the road riders race by. Quin arrived in our follow vehicle and were off and away by 10:15. Not too bad for a hastily put together endeavor. We lost a few riders and our follow car in the first 10 miles but had regrouped by the time we reached our second rest stop.

I lost my phone somewhere along the way, so I don’t have pictures of the rest of the day. I did get it back through a team effort of the De Pijpers and a good samaritan. Thanks Guys!

You can watch a comprehensive video shot by one of the riders here

Thanks for reading, Hope to see you at the next one.
